Week One
During
my first week in the locating brief, I was struggling to think of a concept,
which relates to both my live and my personal brief.I
started by looking at different images for inspiration Pintress is a very
helpful source,as there’s such a wide variety of artist which inspired me when
thinking of my projects and themes.
During
our group tutorial, it helped me to be more selective with what I want to
approach and anything I may have to consider when creating my warp. For example
planning and making sure my warp is compatible to both my projects as it would
be very difficult to create two warps in the time scale.
My task now
is to develop my ideas further by gathering primary visual sources I would like
to improve on my last feedback which is to do more drawings and create a
wide verity to work from and develop I want to be more experimental with my
drawings and unpick my work more.
Week Two
During my second week I gathered
objects which I personally had an emotional attachment to I discovered some
personal items which belonged to my uncle who had recently died. This was the
starting point of my drawings.
I wanted to explore more with my drawings using
different types of methods such as very tight and tonal drawing as
you can see in this image which is an older method of drawing which reminds me
of artist such as Leonardo da Vinci I am very interested with this drawing method.

also included methods such as collage, mix media fine liner and ink which give my work a wider variety of mark making I want now to become more loser with my drawing as it gives me more inspiration to incorporate into my weave work.
Week Three
During the Christmas holidays I lost my flow when drawing so I attended
life drawing sessions to help me with my drawing techniques this helped me to
become looser and flowing with my drawing methods.
I used methods
such as stick and ink which when reviewing the marks that was created was quite
interesting and flowing the ink almost had a glossy tone when thinking how I
can incorporate this into my weave work I am thinking of methods such as
inlaying materials, satin sateen to recreate the flowing marks.
Using methods such as screen print rubbing out parts where the light reflected this was my first time life drawing whilst
was my first time life drawing whilst doing screen print you had to work quite
fast as the colour hardens.
Week Four
During our week back our group feedback session really helped me giving
me inspiration and how to develop my work further as it confused me when doing
two briefs at the same time.
My group really liked the marks from my life drawing class the loose and
tonal parts, when looking closer at my screen prints the lighter tone reminded
my tutor of floats patterns which was quite interesting. After researching I
discovered a weaver’s work who uses the same flowing and lose method like my
print.
Example of the flowing effect in my printed work it has inspired
me to incorporate
furry yarns such as Moe hair and wool to try and recreate
this effect.

incorporated materials such as fluffy yarns brushing parts to create a swishing
effect also leaving parts untouched this is a perfect source of inspiration for
my work, helping me to consider a wide range of different textured yarns
to recreate the same textures from my life drawings.
Week Five
my fifth week I was considering my colour palate when thinking what
colours to include I was inspired by the old family photos which had an array
of browns to grey shades which would be good to include in both briefs as
Calvin Klein incorporates a neutral colour scheme.
I wanted to base my colour scheme on the objects which I have a
deep emotional attachment to so I went to my grandma’s house where she had a
collection of old memories captured in old black and white photographs some of
which turned brown because they are so old. The brown colours really interested me however after making yarn
wrapping incorporating the different types
of browns together seemed a bit flat and didn’t relate to my live brief or my
line drawing as much as I wanted.

When researching Calvin Klein I wanted to make sure that my
warp would be relevant in both projects I started to get a feeling that the company
uses a lot of simple pattern and different textures I want to expand on this
idea of textures by incorporating my own styles to the warp simple patterns repeated
to create an array of texture.
Calvin Klein
When considering my drawing it has a lot of movement and textures
in my opinion it is more fine art work, however it has helped me which inspiration
for form, structures and shapes to incorporate into both of my projects. I plan
to experiment with texture in both projects however refine it and simplify it
for my live brief as Calvin Klein represents a much classier simplified look.
Week Six
I finally decided on a colour scheme which is different grey
tones I have never worked with dark colours so it would be great to challenge myself.
I incorporated the greys tones which was in an old photo of my nanna and her friend
she has now passed away I have an emotional attachment to this image as it helps
me to remember her in a time which she was happy in her life.

I then developed lots of different yarn wraps using different
tones of grey it was very hard to select which one I wanted to use for my warp
as I liked all the colours I think they all worked well together however after
my tutorial Lesley suggested that I double up some yarns together to get a mixture
of the grey colours in my warp.
I am very happy with my end result for my warp I think the
mixture of colours blends in well and the colour concept would fit in well with
Calvin Klein designs I have a greater understanding of blending colours together
and what effect it has in my work.
Week Seven

Warp making week was a disaster for me as both tutors where
away I discovered when wrapping my warp on the mill I tend to get confused and
lose count of my ends I don’t think I can resolve this problem as maths is a
subject I can never seem to improve on.
My tutors where both away I didn’t want to get behind in my work so I attempted to put my own warp on the loom however when trying to thread it in the correct way the string fell off and I lost my place being brave I still attempted to put my warp on the loom however it was a complete mess,I was so distraught with my warp it took my tutor hours to
fix it. One thing I have learnt by this disaster sometimes it’s good to be patient
so you don’t have to wait even longer correcting your mistakes however I am
still proud that I attempted to do this task as I have learnt from my mistakes
and will hopefully never do them again.
Extra ends had to be
added to my warp and it had to be re planned Rebecca says almost any problem
with the loom can be fixed I hope this is true as I always seem to have a lot
of problems when weaving this information is reassuring because in my last unit
I thought I broke the loom.
Week Eight
Live Brief

For my live project I wanted to focus on the different textures
which interested me both from my drawings and other textures.From my drawing it helped me to create weft patterns and different
structures such as rib patterns I feel I have made lots of connections from my sketchbook
to my weave patterns and structures. I want to experiment with different yarns when weaving playing
and manipulating them to see what textures I can create.
By doing a live brief it helped me to get an idea of what
it would be like if I wanted to pursue a professional career as a textile designer.
Personal Brief
I started to create a large body of drawing which I used
them for my colour pallet I was struggling to make my woven pieces different from
my live brief so I incorporated more colour I also wanted to incorporate more
of the different types of line quality from my drawings using patterns such as
Ms and Os which has a flowing fluid feeling like my ink line quality’s.

Experimenting with yarns and materials to try and recreate
the same line qualities in my drawings by drawing my weave ideas out it really
helped me to think how I can connect my drawings to my woven work.
Week Eight
Live Brief
When researching Calvin Klein I discovered that they incorporate
a lot of grey tones in their pieces however I wanted my work to be similar to their
work but incorporate my own unique style I created I pallet of blues to greys I
think this colour scheme works well as it fits into the range of products that
Calvin Klein produced.
A piece which I created by doubling up blue and grey yarns
worked well it’s a simple yet effective piece I also incorporated Moe hair to
give my woven piece a more texture relating to my drawings.
Personal Brief
This piece really relates to the different line qualities in
my drawings I experimented with different textural yarns it has a really sketchy
effect. This piece has been really successful when relating to my drawings.I want to add more colours into my work and experiment more
with woven patterning. the contrast in this piece really worked well with a mixture from light to dark.
Week Nine
Towards my final week I cut my samples off to review them
the see what worked well I discover that all my pieces related more to my live brief.
My woven pieces are very organized yet playful
pieces using different yarns to add floats and texture to my work one piece I think
work well was incorporating ribbon and being it to create a bumpy texture I think
my collection relates to each other yet each piece is different.
I would like to see
my work used as bedding or frow overs it has a very posh. During the last few
weeks I have to try and make my weave samples different from my original pieces
however once you have been weaving the same work for a large amount of time it’s
very hard to get out of that mind frame.
Week ten
This week I was thinking all about my personal brief I was looking
at the compositions and mark making quality’s I experimented with patterns to
try and reproduce the effect my drawings are much more lighter so I brought
more white into my pieces as a collection I experimented with patterning
sequences which has helped me to learn a lot more when creating my own patterns I feel this collection was not as successful as
my live brief however I now have a greater understanding of how my loom works which
will help me in future projects.
My personal brief links together well as it incorporates
the same patterns and its working towards getting the line quality’s which are
in my original drawings.
Evaluation
My drawings of old objects and life drawings was the primary
point of the locating brief it helped me when creating ideas in this project.
I wanted to explore my emotional attachment to objects that
belonged to loved ones which have passed away. After recently losing a loved
one I believe your attachment to an object which belonged to them becomes a lot
stronger it helps you to feel more close to this person.
I created a large body of drawings from my objects which
helped me when developing both briefs for my live project I looked at Calvin Klein
I was inspired by the different textures which my drawing had created I began
to research yarns such as ribbon, Moe hair and wool to combine them into my
woven pieces manipulating them by bending, overlaying, pulling and scratching to
see what textures I could create relating to my drawings. I think this collection
works well it relates to each other and yet but all my pieces are different and
unique I would describe my work as organized yet playful. When considering the
context of my collection pillow covers would work well as it has a very fancy and
elegant feeling to it.
In my personal brief I looked at the different line qualities
from my drawings it really helped me when producing woven work I wanted to incorporate
the same quality’s by experimenting with pattern and different yarns to re crate
the fluid lines from my ink drawings.
While reflecting on my personal brief as a collection I feel
the live brief was more successful in that aspect as it represented what I really
wanted to portray as a collection however I learn more skills when producing my
personal brief as I had to create and draw my own pattern sequences my personal
brief has given me a greater understanding on planning and working on my loom.
Throughout my time in the locating brief I feel that it has
been quite a difficult task working on two briefs at the same time. During the start
of the brief I struggled with my ideas I feel in this brief I was very much out
of my comfort zone as I have never produced two different briefs at the same
time. The live brief has been more enjoyable than expected it has helped me to
consider what it would be like to work in a professional setting and has also
helped me to make connections in the art world.
Time management was very important as I had to produce two
briefs in a small amount of time setting up my loom was the longest part as I attempted
to put my warp onto the loom by myself this was a big mistake as I did it completely
wrong and Rebecca had to spend hours correcting it however I did learn from my
mistake and now know the correct way to set my loom up.
This brief has been quite a challenge as I have been
dealing with a loss of a loved one I had to push myself when producing work and
being motivated however I am glad to know I can work through even the hardest
times in my life it will help me in the future to obtain a professional job.
