Third week in Construct

My third week in construct I found it to be quite rewarding as i got to cut my work off the loom, I could not belive the amount of work I had produced, what I found to be quite diffcult was tieing the strings back onto the loom after cutting it off  my knots were too lose which kept falling off, after many failed attempts I asked one of my peers to help me and by watching her slowly tieing the string to the looms I was able to tie one knot my self.

I also exsperment with the Scot weave system on the computer but even after a tutorial on it I found it to be quite confuseing however after paying around with the control I created the thread and colour and the pattern how ever I could not change the colour of my patterns. 

I really enjoyed my time in construct which has really suprised me as I thought I would not be able to do the work as it looked really complicated, what I also like the tutor she was very helpful on a one to one basis I found myself to be very comfortable with her.

Construct week two

My second week in weave was constrictive I used different yarns for my weave,which had different effects on my work,I started to look at the colors of the yarns in more detail for example, I used the gold and the rusty brown yarn the create the same texture of a door handle as both yarns are made out of a plastic matalic material which had a smooth hard texture, however some yarns took longer to weave such the soft wool and the mohair which kept breaking because the yarn was to soft so it took a longer time to weave because I had to keep threading the yarn however the thick hard wool made my patterns pop out of my weave which gave it a 3D effect. I found group tutorial was helpful because I got to  see other students work which  sparked of more ideas for me and it also  helped with my confidence when speaking out loud which I struggle with.

What I struggled with in my weave was my time keeping I found remembering numbers sequences was hard however I overcome this singing the number pattern out loud which helped me to rember the numbers and to produce my weave a lot quicker.

Construct Blog task

Dash & Miller were formed in 2009 by designers Julliet bailey and Frankie brewer, they decided to combined there depth of knowledge of hand weaving and industrial experience in a unique approach to textile design.  The type of work they use is hand manipulated and mix media designs and also screen prints.'Dash & miller also collaborate with woad wear mill, to make seasonal collections of fabric available by the meter.  They cater for a wide range of things because they cover so much in their company such as fashion, fabric prints and much more.  My thoughts apon Dash& millers are there fabrics are very modern, very high standard of quality, very unique and they use quiet a lot of repeated pattern which works well in there designs.

My thoughts on this piece is I like the bright, colours it almost reminds of a rainbow. Dash and miller create the work not just flat but also on a three dimensional scale. Dash and miller incorporates a lot of repeated pattern in their work such as spots, patches and more which works well for there product designs such as pillows and other household objects.

First week in Construct

My first week in weave was surprising as I thought weave would be quite difficult as it look very complex and confusing but after the tutor explained how to make a weave it was easier than I thought.  I started with simple weaving techniques and then went on to create more complex weaving I tried to incorporate the colours of rust mental and decay from my mood board as you cannot create a picture from weave you have to incorporate you work in other forms such as the colours.  I struggled with the number sequences in weave and was a lot slower then other people as it takes me longer time to remember the number and maths as a subject is something I find very hard to understand and try to avoid.  What I enjoyed most about weave is the feedback from the tutor she helped with work on my sketchbook to improve what I find difficult this then enables me to feel more confident when it comes to weaving.

Contextual References

I choose Albra Prat work because she used the same technique as me on the Lazer cutter Its amazing what you can create for example Albra cuts and engraves millions of small shapes repeated to create a larger piece of work she experiment with different shape and sizes and colours which has inspired me what would happen if I  had the same patter and repeated this technique again. Its amazing how simples shapes repeated can create a garment to wear.  

The material she uses is neoprene fabric I think her work look very futuristic and very simple not to complex which works well.

Mai keeps he work very simple using materials like felt, cotton and white paper I like the method she uses to display her flower piece by  hanging it like a curtain the scale of her work is large and she also uses repeated pattern I think this technique work very well as it is appealing to look at. I choose her work because it resembles mine I am also using a flower pattern I would like to try the hanging method to see what effect it has on my work.

Patricia is a designer I chose her work because it has similar shapes and patterns to my work  it helps me to visualise what my shape and structures could be made into. Patrica  work on many different scales and shape verifying to what furniture she is creating in this piece the colours are quite simple  however her in her other pieces she uses  bright and bold colours.

Charles layers paper to build  different structures what I  like about his work is his use of bold colour’s which stand out it also  looks quite fun I like the way  how he layers piece upon piece of paper and how the structure look very sturdy. He repeats the same pattern but he makes it larger to create a mounting affect so people say it reminds them of a wave. What I have learn from this artist is that paper can be strong when placed in a particular structure.

The process used  are simple twisting and turning paper  to create shapes and adding colour his work can be many different scales from tiny delicate to large and expressive.

His work looks very natural I like how she only adds a hint of colour to this piece by manipulating paper you can create Meany different textures and form. The reason I choose this artist that I like the texture she create not only is it visually stimulating but it very textual you would want to touch her work rather than a smooth cold surface.

I would like to try this technique to see what it can create.

Origins Evaluation

My experience throughout my time doing origins brief I have produced a body of work from print, mix media and Friday drawings. I started my brief by collecting my ten objects which I then drew using black mediums which helped me to produce my later work. I focused on one particular object which was a Japanese doll which helped me to feed my project.  I found that drawing personally was therapeutic for me as I enjoy it. After i continued to draw my objects I later found the process a little repetitive because I was using the same objects over and over.

 For print I created a colour palate from an image, which I choose, this would be the colour range for my printed pieces. I felt I struggled a lot with this, as I couldn’t create the same mood as my picture, as I have no experience with creating colour dyes it took me many attempts to perfect this process. As I have now realised my mistakes and now feel this process has enabled my confidence to grow and taught me skills which will help me with future textiles projects. I later produced fabric screen printed pieces and a digital print which I found amazing how my designs and ideas come to life.

For my next rotation I did mix media, which was completely different to what I thought would be. We had to create designs relating to my objects.

I struggled with this process, as I have no experience with 3d. Throughout my work I believe there is a clear connection between my visual research and my produced pieces, for e.g. for mixed media I looked at my flower object and used the outline to create 3d paper pieces which when given feedback my peers said this worked well. I also produced laser cuts using a range of different materials. What i  found worked well was my flower design which I laser cut onto fabric for this I used a silk fabric to try and simulate the delicacy of a flower.

On Friday drawing days I struggled at first to create a 3d form of my object I then simplified taken shapes to create 3d form exploring techniques and materials such as plastic, wood, card, wire and foam boared and many more materials exploring 3d forms which I took further to laser cutting. Throughout my time in mix media I feel it worked more successful for me than print because I feel I enjoyed the experience more playing with materials and witnessing the amazing outcomes that you can actually produce.

Throughout my time in university I have engaged in all sessions and used my independent study time wisely as I am not behind which I felt I would struggle more than some with my dyslexia fortunately this brief I have overcome my scepticism and confidence for me has been gained which gives me great confidence in future study which I am looking forward to. I found origins brief to be a great start to my time in university I hope to continue in learning new skills in the near future.

Print

My time in the print was very productive,  I learnt many new skills such as how to develop my work and ideas onto fabric. I first selected a image which I like the colours of  I then used this image to  created my colour pallet, This colour scheme was then used throughout  my computer motif and my fabric prints. When trying to create the colour from my  pallet  I struggled to make the same as my colour pallet,  However considering that  it was my first time creating dyes i  think i did rather well and can learn and improve from my mistakes. When creating  my  photoshop motifs it was more easy to get the colours of my motif  however I struggle to create the same mood which is in my original image. What have learnt from this experience is I need to improve on blending and mixing colours together to create the mood of my image.

What I enjoyed most about print was having the freedom to draw the way i want my favourite piece of my print work was my black and white striped croceys  which was inspired by my Japanese doll object I think the pattern of my image worked well together combining different shapes and repeating the pattern
 together which gave my design a fun look.

In conclusion I have enjoyed my time in University so far 

I hope to learn and archive more skills as time goes by...
