Reflection of Weave samples

When reviewing my weave sample I think as a collection they relate and work well together however (Fig1) is the most powerful image as it has bright colours, fading which relates to my previous drawings.

In (Fig2) and (Fig3) I used  much more lighter tones  to relate towards my drawing of myself on holiday I though using patterns such as twills repeated adding hints of colour would be great for my weave pieces it still has the fading detail however it’s not as powerful as (Fig1) in my opinion.

When looking at which of my samples do not fit into my collection I  would have to say  (Fig4) because The pattern looks out of place as I  did my weaving to tight and made errors also the colours don’t quite match my pallet however I did not see this until my piece was woven. While thinking about the context I have considered my work would look better as an interior pillow case design for reasons such as the dyes do not run when being washed furthermore my fabric is not so delicate as to fall apart when used its hardwearing and durable perfect for a pillow.

Seventh Week in Weave

During this week in weave I started to work from my drawings and developed it further using methods such as dying my hanks the same colours as my original images as you can see in (fig3) I incorporated art work inspired from my trip and memories to Thailand. I really struggled when dyeing my yarn as I only wanted to add a small amount of colour however when I attempted to re dye the same spot my hank would go a murky brow colour I Resolved this problem by waiting for part of my dyed to dry before reapplying the colour dyes onto my hank.

When considering the pattern in my weave I am still using simple patterns and the yarns for my weft are very colourful and detailed.

Group meeting was very interesting this week having guest speakers is very inspirational it helps me to visualize what career I want to peruse if I could make a suggestion I would like a tutorial on how to peruse a teaching career.

Evaluation

My holiday to Thailand was the beginning of my brief, I was inspired by the beautiful bright colours and patterns in the Grand Palace in Bangkok Thailand.

I wanted to explore the Asian culture further, one aspect which inspired me was the Geisha girls there costumes are so delicate and bright as if they are a walking piece of art. I looked an artist Katsushika Hokusai who has used a traditional method of block printing the colours he used where aged and faint.  I incorporated this method onto my printed work which worked well I added a small amount of bright colours to make my print pop out this method was the inspiration for the design of my warp which then I developed later.

I felt I had a really good starting point for my brief as I have a great passion for Asia which made me excited when starting my project.

         

When thinking which words to incorporate into my work I chose complex and minimal I wanted to use simple pattern repeated to create a complex design. I feel in this brief I have really come out of my comfort zone not just with my art work but with my group tutorials having the confidence to express myself and looking forward to presenting my work which I once dreaded.

I experimented with different materials some of which I have never used before I found it was so much fun just to play and test different materials even if it was not the result I wanted the process was still enjoyable. One technique I experimented with was nail vanish remover which when applied right transfer’s the image in a scratchy faded way however it took some time to perfect this process.

After considering all the work I have created I wanted to develop it further by incorporating this faded method into my weft. I wanted my woven work to have hints of colour fading like the scratchy faded effect running through my overall theme.

I incorporated methods and materials such as hand dyeing my own fabrics using brusho dyes and dispersed dyes which I faded using light and darker tones, then incorporated patterns such as twills satin sateen it really worked giving the effect I wanted. I kept the patterns in my woven work quite simple as to relate it to my chosen words I also experimented with image maker trying to transfer the image onto my thread which unfortunately looked quite shiny and stuck together which I was much disappointed with as it took me hours to apply this onto each individual string a method I will not be trying again.

Sixth Week in Weave

I personally really enjoyed this week in weave, as I experimented with different mediums, such as nail vanish remover which when applied right transfer’s the image in a scratchy faded way however it took some time to perfect this process as you can see in (fig1) this is the effect I added some colour to make my work stand out I was very pleased with this process. I wanted to incorporate this into my weave the faded scratchy effect almost like it’s a glimpse of  memories. So I hand dyed yarns to the colours of my work and used a pattern such as twills and satin which really helped me to produce the effect I wanted I am very pleased with this sample as it relates to my development work. In (fig3) you can really see the colours fading away and mixture of different colours.

I did not enjoy the group lecture this week as I struggled to understand how the slides help us in my opinion I would of loved to have a tutorial on how to make a promotional packed and images of our work for the CV as I have never done one before and the CV tutorial was more about what to include on your CV.
