Chosen Area Construct Week 2

During my second week of wave I experimented with contrasting colours such as black and whites looking at the different textures to try and incorporate my chosen word I was also using ribbon which creates a whole different pattern to the woven work. Our group tutorials was very helpful I think having tutorials in a smaller group helps me to express my Ideas and opinions comfortably I feel I’m not being judged by thirty people which is a lot of pressure I feel like I have the time to communicate my ideas.

The Friday drawing days where very fun this week as suggested in my tutorials I worked in black and white media mono printing onto paper using oil bar creating different marks with the package of the egg my favourite part of the whole day was eating the kinder egg after my hard work

Evaluation;Sampling

Thorough my time in the Sampling unit I went to the following areas Construct and Embroidery.I was set the brief in Feedback week and I went to the following places to which I felt would spark my inspiration, places such as the Manchester Museum, the Holding Gallery along with the Slide induction. In my opinion the Manchester Museum was great inspiration for looking at data and collections, as there is such a wide variety of different collections.During my time traveling to the Museum yet again I began to think in a different way, which was about data collection that could be anything. I was walking when suddenly noticed an unusual looking door handle it was rusty as time has worn it away however I thought about its rustic faded features which I felt added history to this particular handle as this what intrigued me to it in the first place, so I took a photo of it and at that point my idea originated to explore the city capturing wondrous range of door handles. I walked to town taking photos and quick sketches of different door handles capturing the different qualities of each handle nevertheless when I arrived into central town there where no door handles to be seen everything was automatic or electronic which made me wonder if door handles will one day disappear as they will no longer be needed.My first rotation was Weave were I reflected in what manner could I incorporate my door handles into my woven work, I come to a decision to look at the colours and textures of my handles and to emphasize them however at first it was a struggle to come to terms with even simple weaving pattern as I tend to avoid numbers it something I have always struggled with, I kept forgetting the numbers for my weave however I solved this problem by singing them out like a song singing it out loud sounds silly I know but it really helped me a lot. By different types of yarns and there quality’s I tried to incorporate the same texture and colours of which a handle would have, I achieved this using shiny plastic yearns to represent the cold shiny touch of the handle which I think worked well and also to gave my work a dated look. After testing many different types of yarns I discovered that some yarns are very difficult to weave with, as the yarn was very delicate and kept breaking such as the Moe hair and the fine wool.  My second rotation Embroidery was quite hard to get used to, as there was 10 to 15 samples which in my opioin was quite hard to produce in a week however I managed to complete the task.Embroidery was quite a challenge for me I felt I did not enjoy as much as weave, as I prefer to take my time when producing samples when I rush I tend to make mistake and embroidery is quite hard to correct as you cannot get a rubber and erase it. I really enjoyed both rotations which both had challenges which I felt I rose to these challenges however I wanted to explore weave more thoroughly so I chose it for my last three weeks for my word I decided to choose duality however and explore it within my woven work through colour pattern and much more however I feel as it’s a bit random adding a word on the last three week of sampling.

I have really enjoyed the sampling brief however I will be happy to move on and start a new project as I feel like it has been a long time.  The weekly blog post have helped me so much by helping me to review my work and have confidence with my writing.

PE Task 2

           Debbie Smyth                            Dash and Miller                               Lisa Milroy  

                                                          

During the Sampling unit there have been countless artist, which have inspired and influenced my work, which has also motivated me to produce samples and feed my project.
Through my rotations (weave and Embroidery), I looked at a female artist, Debbie Smyth whose work inspired me greatly. This particular artist has a unique way of working as she works with thread, pins and fraying materials also manipulates and overlaps threads within her work to create various range of quality’s using line.
Debbie’s work looks very scratchy and free hand; it helped me to develop ideas within my own sketchbook. I began to challenge the way in which I draw. As well as drawing plain door handles, in which I found simple and boring. Debbie’s drawings inspired me to use different techniques when looking at line quality this has and inspired me to further develop my ideas. I chose not use thread and pins however; I used a fine liner pen to incorporate this idea into my design.
My drawing techniques added more quality, if I wanted my drawing to look perfect I would of took a picture therefore in order to show a unique way of documenting door handles as you can see in my ‘sampling Debbie smith blog post’ the scratchy effect I believe works well. Debbie’s work has inspired my whole way of thinking and my drawing techniques thought this project, which has been a great help when producing my work.
The second artist I looked at was Dash and miller who are fabric designers, they use a unique approach to the weaving industry and textile industry. Dash and millers work helped me with my woven work. After researching their work it helped me to discover many processes in weave when working on looms. Dash and Miller also use techniques such as hand manipulating, mix media and also screen print which if I had more time in this area I would further develop my ideas. One technique, which I discovered, was the repeated pattern, using contrasting colours I have tried this technique in my own woven work, which I think worked well as it makes the design pop out.
Though there are many artist to choose from my third artist whom I came across when traveling to Liverpool was called ‘Lisa Milroy’ I was drawn to her work as it was quite relevant to me relating to the door handles I had been looking at. I was looking at door handles for my Sampling unit, her work represents a material culture in our world objects and things we own can determine who we are. This I intend to incorporate in my own work when looking at materials I weave with. I really liked the processes that Lisa used to create her work, it also helped me in my work as it helped me think about my compassion and layout when looking at different artist it helped me to think about my work in a different light.

 

Debbie Smyth

I looked at an artist called Debbie Smyth her worked inspired me with my fine line drawing Debbie uses an unusual way of drawing she draws large scale using only thread and pins to create her art.

Her pushes the limitations between fine art drawings and textile art, flat and 3D work, illustration and embroidery, lifting the lines off the page making the work pop out literally.

This is what Debbie thinks about her work “On first glance, it can look like a mass of threads but as you get closer sharp lines come into focus, creating a spectacular image. The images are first plotted out before being filled out with the thread, the sharp angles contrasting with the floating ends of the thread.  And despite the complexity of the lengthy process I try to capture a great feeling of energy and spontaneity, and, in some cases, humour”

Her work helped me with my mark making techniques to use line over lapping as you can see from our work there is a similarity.

My thought about her work is I really like her idea of drawing with thread and her different quality’s of line she creates by overlapping the thread.

Chosen Area Construct week one

During my first week of weave I was struggling with which word to chose as I didn’t even know the meaning of the worlds so I research each word there meaning until I found one which interested me I came across the word duality I thought it would be a great word to incorporate into my woven work. During this week I felt it took me some time to get into my weaving faster as I have not done it in such along time I cant wait to  see how my ideas develop over the next weeks.

Third week of Embroidery

My third week of embroidery was very difficult to attend all sessions as the snow-stopped transport or made it slow however I managed to attend nearly every session.

What I learnt from my time in embroidery was to try and work faster and to plan my working time more productively which will help me in the future I felt that in embroidery your work had to be neat and perfect however I am a messy worker so I felt my work did not fit into that way I want to experiments with my sowing seeing what works and what didn’t it may not be always neat but its learning from my mistakes

 I found Friday drawing days to be more lose and experiential all most like a fine art class experimenting with words and drawings it helped me to  loosen up my drawings in  my sketch book  other than being tight
