last week unit X

Knit Samples

The final week of my brief and there is so much to do, I am having trouble  yet again combining the  flowers onto my knit I have tried so many different techniques however it doesn’t seem to be working this week has been very  stressful as my knitting kept falling off I think this brief has been one of the hardest challenges I have ever done because I have been struggling with my work I am not quite confident I will get a good mark however if I  was marked on my efforts alone am sure I would.  I fell way out of my comfort zone but I have still attended every session and tried my hardest. I am confident in one onto knit sample which I used bonder web and foil to trap the flower  I really like the concert of trapping flowers into my knit however when trying to do this it was a lot harder.

My thought about this brief I loved going on the trips to different places it helped get me excited and look forward to starting my project however I am very happy to be finishing knit as it has been very annoying and frustrating I am very proud to have passed my first year achieving things that I didn’t think I could every do for example even my talking in front of people has got so much better if it was last year I would of ran out the room university has helped me to develop in so Meany ways I am looking forward to my second year.

Unit X Week three and Four

Looking at colour change

yarn wrap I crated from the flower however the flower has change colours due to it dyeing this is why my colour pallet keeps changing .

Week One..

After the Holidays I struggled to remember all the techniques I learnt as I was only just taught the basic techniques and three week is a long time off, I really struggled with carrying on with my knit as I had to retrace my step and reacquaint my myself with all the knit machinery however the group crit helped me develop my ideas further my idea and concept of trapping flowers into my work and also including text into my work such as rubbings from graves memories keepsakes  to give it a deeper meaning. After my crit I felt the idea of trapping the flowers was really good idea however I was way out of my comforts zone as I am struggling severely with my knitting I realize now that knit is not the option for me no matter how much I try I just can’t seem to pick up the skills I am persevering with it but it is quite a challenge to.

For this week I worked on my samples for my technical file and which is taking a longer time than I thought a what is also very time consuming is steaming my samples I left all my samples until there was so many not realizing how long it took to pin my samples and steam them from now on I will do my samples a bit at a time

Week two...

The week after I tried to incorporate flowers into my knit but I struggled to find a way to do this so I experimented but I was still finding basic knit hard let alone trapping flowers. I had to think of another way to incorporate them into my work. I started by writing down some words which would help me when producing my samples. I then thought about the idea of hand knitting flowers and clippings from photos and obituary’s trapping it together between tape I think this technique work fairly well it was difficult to produce as the tape kept breaking however after an hour I managed to knit 4 rows before it broke, this sparked my inspiration what other ways could I incorporate the memories and flowers into my work. I really wanted to create my own yarn to knit with so I did by collecting flowers and sowing onto them with bonder web this technique worked really well it looked faded and old, something that you have treasured over time however when trying to knit with my yarn it did not work as well as I intended it to be it looked quite messy and earthy you could not see all the bits I had incorporated onto it however I do think this yarn has been the turning point for my brief.

Easter holidays week One and Two

Visual Research

Week one..

During the Easter holidays I went to lots of different places, which inspired me within my Unit X project the first place I went to was the Whitworth art gallery which had a beautiful collection of floral patterns which somewhat reminded me of the floral pattern  on the costumes in Plat hall, however what really caught my eye was a beautiful exhibition called  “War Room” by James Copper it was a very  emotional piece, which really inspired me to  look at the meaning why  do we leave flowers for our loved ones is it because we want to capture one last moment with that person one last memory which got me to think where would be the best place to find this out?
The Second place I went to was a Grave site where many people go to capture a apart of the person they have lost I then collecting discarded flowers as I walked there was something about flowers decaying which excited me I want to incorporate flowers into my work and knit work however I am unsure how to do this yet. By going to a grave site it helped me to think more in depth about my work thinking more about the context of my work a of with I have struggled with in previous brief and am trying to improve upon.

Week Two..

During the second and third week of Easter I wanted to explore flowers and there significance into my work I looked at it in a completely different light, trying to come out of my comfort zone by drawing with the actual flower to see what interesting marks it could produce I also printed with the flowers to create different textures onto the paper however I did not feel it was capturing want I wanted to I also left the flower there for a week doing a colour pallet every three day the see the range of different colours I was amazed to see how it changed over such a short period of time I felt as I have explored the flowers significance however I felt there was something missing but it was still a fun processes exploring  flowers. I have being trying to work on the points I was given from my last briefs feedback to be more selective when developing my sketch book which has been very hard as I was taught that  a sketchbook is for experimenting in college my tutor used to say “don’t bin anything away put it in your sketchbook” however I realize now that’s what my technical file is for.

Week one and two of knit

Week One..

Knit Samples

During my first week of Knit I must admit it was very slow I could not really expand on my project as I was just coming to term with  learning the knit techniques which in my opinion it was a lot harder than it looks much more complicated than weave I will try my best to learn all the techniques then I can put some of my ideas into my knit work.

My first sample as to can see didn’t last long it fell off the knit machine after four rows I then discovered I was using the wrong tension I do think knit is a very hard skill to learn because if you follow one step wrong your whole knit will fall off however my second and third sample was much more of an improvement as you can see my knit has no holes in it and I can change colours.

The only thing I don’t like about knit you are on your own a lot of the time there are only few group sessions which if you’re a beginner you need a lot more one on one attention. I  am currently enjoying knit so far but it is a challeng.
 week two...

During my second week of knit I feel I am more confident with basic knit skills I really enjoyed the punch card techniques however I am struggling to find inspiration from the recent trips I plan to visit  other places over the holiday however for now I am looking at my photos took from Plat hall using the window view technique which I learnt on Friday drawing day selecting different sections of my photos which interested me. In group crit I was told I need to focused on something rather than just drawing random objects in my work I need a concept however when thinking  what I like the most was the floral pin cushions there materials and colour was very interesting I  may wish to explore this further over the holidays.
